Most questions about the D7 process are answered on the specific Roadmap step they relate to — income questions on Step 1, documents on Step 6, AIMA on Step 12, and so on. This page covers the more general questions that come up again and again in the Facebook group.
How long does the whole process take, start to finish?
Roughly, in stages: document preparation (2–6 weeks), consulate or VFS appointment booking and interview (1–3 months), visa approval (3–8 weeks), then your AIMA appointment in Portugal (typically 2–6 months after arrival, though this varies — see Step 12 for the current honest picture on AIMA timelines). All told, most applicants are looking at somewhere between 6 months and a year from starting paperwork to holding a residence card, though individual cases vary significantly.
Can I work in Portugal on a D7 Visa?
Yes — the D7 allows full-time or part-time work in Portugal, in addition to the passive income that qualified you for the visa.
Do I need to speak Portuguese?
Not to apply for the D7 itself. Portuguese only becomes a formal requirement later — an A2-level language test is required for permanent residency (after 5 years) and for citizenship (after 10 years for most applicants, 7 for EU/CPLP nationals, under the current law). Can I travel within the EU/Schengen area once I have residency?
Yes — a Portuguese residence permit allows free travel throughout the Schengen zone, under the normal 90-days-in-180 rule that applies to short stays elsewhere in Schengen.
Can I use Airbnb or a hotel booking as proof of accommodation?
Generally, no — not anymore. This used to work with some consulates, but the current trend across almost all consulates is to expect a 12-month rental agreement or property ownership as proof of accommodation. A short-term booking might still work as a brief stopgap right at the very start of a move, but don't plan your application around it — secure longer-term accommodation before you apply. Requirements do vary by consulate, so if you're unsure, confirm directly with the consulate handling your application, or ask in the Facebook group where others may have recent, location-specific experience.
Is my situation the same as everyone else's?
Not always — requirements can vary slightly between different VFS Global centres and Portuguese consulates worldwide (different accepted lease lengths, translation requirements, and so on). The most reliable way to get a current, location-specific answer is to ask in the Facebook group, where members regularly share what a specific consulate or VFS centre is actually requesting right now.
